I'm suffering from depression more often than not (bipolar), have been since my teens (hence my strong attraction to Linkin Park; the lyrics always hit me too strongly). During my low spells, there's only one person in the world who can tell something is actually wrong with me (my best friend); as far as the rest of the world can tell, I'm ecstatic. But she's able to spot it somehow, maybe the fact that she's also diagnosed with depression has to do with it.
Suicide wise, although I'm not actively suicidal, and haven't attempted it, I am a high suicide risk. And the risk doesn't change because I'm currently more depressed or more hypomanic, the risk is always there, and the thought is always there. If anything, I occasionally consider myself a slightly higher risk during my hypomanic phases, just because I'm actually more energetic, mentally and physically, and more confident. Like you said, all it takes is just a moment, a single moment where your mind takes over, you get tunnel vision, and you get too caught up in your thoughts. Suddenly all you see is a big fog, almost a disconnection from the world, and you're not sure what you're feeling but you know the solution to it.
